![]() That November, George H.W Bush won the Presidency and Ronald Reagan was gone but left his mark on the Supreme Court. President Ronald Reagan nominated Justice Anthony Kennedy in November 1987 and Kennedy was confirmed by the Senate in 1988. This is where the term “lame duck” is questioned. Once again, not everything you hear in debates is true and this is no exception. What if I told you that President Obama has selected two Supreme Court justices during his time and this would be his THIRD nomination? In the past debate, Marco Rubio stated that it has been over 80 years since a lame duck President has nominated a supreme court justice. So a “lame duck” president, ok so what’s the problem? This doesn’t change the fact that Supreme Court Justices are still determined by the President sitting in office no matter what. I could say that is pretty much President Obama, although I don’t like the term and find it a little impractical to use this term with any political authority. According to definition, a “lame duck” is a elected official who is nearing the end of his/her term and usually one who’s successor has already been determined. It’s actually a pretty simply drawn out process so I ask what is the problem? The problem is we are in the 8th and final year of President Obama’s term in office and he is now referred to as a “lame duck President”. So what’s the big deal? President appoints a new Justice and that candidate goes through the senate (and usually heavy scrutiny) to see if they are qualified and should be a Supreme Court Justice. On FebruJustice Antonin Scalia passed away and thus opened a spot on the Supreme Court. who knew?) I’m back with a new issue to discuss. Well after a hiatus from writing (college can really take up time. ![]()
